The Story of Turkish Coffee



Although it is not grown in Turkey, Turkish Coffee, which is a world-famous flavor thanks to its cooking method, is a rich accumulation of Turkish Culture. Turkish Coffee, whose beans are called “black pearls” and one cup has a memory of forty years, was served with forty different brewing methods in the past. Let's take a look at the coffee culture transferred from the Ottoman Arabian Peninsula to Europe in this article.

The origin of coffee is known as the Arabian peninsula. It is estimated that the first use of coffee began around 575 years ago. Coffee, also called "Black Pearl", spread from Yemen to Mecca and Medina, and from there to Iran, Egypt, Turkey and Europe at the end of the 15th century thanks to travelers.


There are multiple rumors about the arrival of coffee in the Ottoman Empire.

According to the first of these rumors, it was brought to Istanbul by two Syrian entrepreneurs in 1554.


According to the other story, Özdemir Pasha, who was the Governor of Yemen under Suleiman the Magnificent in 1517, brought the coffee he admired to Istanbul. The masters prepared this coffee carefully and served it to the Sultan.


Katip Çelebi, on the other hand, wrote in his notebook that coffee came to Istanbul by ships in 1543 and that Istanbul met coffee.



Why is Turkish Coffee so popular?


There are many reasons why Turkish Coffee is so popular. The first of these is undoubtedly that it tastes very good. Another reason is that it is cooked in a more intense consistency than other types of coffee, and it has a unique smell and taste on the palate.


Why Is Turkish Coffee Served With Water?


According to legend, if the guest drinks coffee first, he/she is full. If he/she drinks the water first, it means he/she is hungry. And the host prepares a meal for this guest.


Why Is Turkish Coffee Served With Turkish Delight?



Turkish Coffee is usually served with Turkish delight. Again, according to rumors, people used to offer Turkish delight with coffee as a way to ask their guests about their satisfaction. If the guest ate the Turkish delight after drinking the coffee, he would express that he was satisfied with the way the host hosted him. If he/she did not eat the Turkish delight, he/she would express that he/she was not satisfied with the way the host hosted him.


Turkish coffee balances the cholesterol level in the blood and increases the effect of the painkillers used. However, if Turkish Coffee is drunk more than 3 cups a day, it can cause rhythm disorders in the heart.
