Saint Benoit High School



The Jesuits came to the Ottoman Empire in 1583. They were given permission from the sultan to stay in the building known today as Saint Benoit College.

The first educational institution in Saint-Benoît was established in 1583, again with the initiative of the Jesuit priests, attached to the monastery. During the plague epidemic in 1586, when all the Jesuits in charge died, the Kapusen priests took over the school. However, by going to the Topkapı Palace of Saint Joseph de Leonessa, one of these priests, Sultan III. Upon Murad's call to become a Christian, the Capuchin priests were arrested and deported. For this reason, the school was in danger of closing, but the Jesuits soon returned to the school and managed to keep the institution alive. During this period, Saint-Benoît became the center of Jesuit activities in the Ottoman lands.

In the plague of 1586, all Jesuits died. A new group of Jesuits came in 1609 mainly to do three things:


- Saint Teaching and managing at Benoit High School.


- Taking care of the spiritual needs of Christian slaves (Christians captured by the Ottoman army in wars or raids).


- Traveling through the region (as far as Trabzon and Yerevan) preaching mostly to local Christians (to Armenians, Greeks and Levantines).


In 1625, a group of Jesuits was sent to Aleppo, Damascus, Tripoli and Sidon.

Founded by Jesuit missionaries who settled in the Benoit Church and Monastery, provided education to Greek and Jewish children as well as Latin children. The school, which was closed in 1585 due to an epidemic, was reopened in 1609. When the Jesuit order was abolished in 1773, it was handed over to the Lazarists. In 1831 the syllabus was adapted to schools in Europe. In 1839, the girls' section was opened. The two divisions merged in 1987.
