OTTOMAN CLOCKS AND EUROPEAN CLOCKS

Ottoman Clocks

While timing was the work of the timekeepers in the Ottoman society, and while unlimited number and variety of clocks entered the palaces and cities from the west throughout the empire, we had very few mechanical watchmakers, who were more polished and valuable by this few. Our grandfather Ahmet Eflaki Dede, Mehmet Şükrü, Ahmet Gülşeni Mevlevi, Şeyh Dede, the great mathematician and astronomer Süleyman Leziz, Edirneli İbrahim, Mustafa Aksarayî from Yenikapı Mevlevi Lodge... These watches are Turkish-alafranga double-dial, calendar, They are astronomical, very precise, handmade watches, some of them with music, the outer casing of which reflects the craftsman who made it completely, since there is no workshop or continuation of tradition. These masters, most of whom grew up in Mevlevihanes, produced one or a few hours in their lifetime, alone, without institutionalization, without cooperation with business lines, with their own dreams and dreams, endless patience and endurance, talent and a different perception of life, difficulty and unrequitedness. therefore, they were able to do things that cannot even be thought of, with the satisfaction of throwing a weight off themselves and leaving this world as a creditor.

European Clocks

Since the 16th century, with the spread of many watches to the palace and the statesmen, the Ottoman society became a big market for western watch manufacturers, the production of many watches, the production of many watches, the settlement of foreign agents in Istanbul, and the suitable led to the development of a clock form. Topkapı Palace is one of the rare places where a four-hundred-year-old mechanical watch tradition and development can be seen with its watch collection belonging to different periods, styles and masters. While European watches, automatic machines, semi-automatic and musical watches, adult watches, desk clocks and pocket watches are seen in the collection, the time is resonated from time to time with the unique watches made by famous masters for the palace.
